Reading beside the draft:
the reading pane

Most of writing is reading with a pen in hand. The reading pane puts the source beside the draft so a passage, its page number and its citation go into the text in one move — and your marks stay in the PDF.

Opening a source

Right-click a file in the Research folder and choose Open in Reading Pane, or use View ▸ Split Editor with a resource selected. The pane opens beside the document you are writing; a PDF, a Word or RTF file, an image, or a web page captured into Research all open there. Open a research PDF on its own, as the main view, and the same reading tools are in its toolbar.

Find

Type in the pane's Find field to search a PDF; matches are highlighted and ▲/▼ step through them, scrolling the page to each. Word and RTF files are searched with ⌘F in the preview. (Images are not searchable yet — text in a scanned figure would need OCR, which is planned.)

Highlights and notes

Select a passage and Highlight it; select a highlighted passage and click again to remove it. Note attaches a comment to the selection. Both are written into the PDF itself as standard annotations, so they show in Preview, Acrobat and Zotero, and survive the project being moved. The notes list shows everything you have marked in this file and jumps to it.

Quote and cite

Select a passage and press Quote: it lands in the document as a block quote with the citation and page already filled in —

> … the quoted passage … [@bridgman1935, p. 12]

The citation key is matched from your bibliography by the PDF's title; when the match is right, Cite inserts just the citation at the caret, with the page if a passage is selected, and when it is not you pick the reference instead. For how references get into the project in the first place, see Citations from Zotero & BibTeX.

On iPhone and iPad

Research files open in a viewer on iOS, with the system's own search and markup. The quote-with-citation and annotation tools are Mac-only for now.

Web pages too. A page captured with Web capture into Research is a readable snapshot in the project, so a source quoted from the reading pane is still there when the original link has rotted.
