When Scrivener is the better choice
Fair is fair. Choose Scrivener if you write fiction first (its novel-writing tooling, name generators, and templates are unmatched), if you need Windows, if your workflow is built on rich-text styling rather than markup, or if you want two decades of books, courses, and forum lore behind your tool. Can I write my thesis or dissertation in Markdown?
Yes — this is exactly Folio Writer's use case. Draft chapters as separate Markdown documents in the binder, cite from BibTeX with author–year keys, and compile the whole thesis to a typeset PDF, Word, or LaTeX with title page, numbering, cross-references, and a formatted bibliography.
Is there a "Scrivener with citations"?

Can I move an existing Scrivener project over?
Export from Scrivener to plain text or Word, then import: Word (.docx) import is built in (Pro), and Markdown files can simply be dropped into a project's folder. Binder structure is rebuilt by dragging sections into place — there is no one-click .scriv importer (yet).
Is there a Typst editor for Mac?
